Any input on the minimum distance between rear axle housing flange faces on a '56? I want to have the tires tuck under the stock fenders nicely without destroying the them while driving. I'll probably use a panhard rod along with leaf springs with the axle on top to get the height I want and control the side to side movement.
I could just scoot under the truck and measure it out, but I'm at work and impatient as H. E. double hockey sticks!
Check out the tech article under Articles/Specs at the top of the forum. About halfway down under Most Popular Articles you will see one about rearends for the 1948-60 trucks.
i think it is more going to depend on what tires and rims you are going to use than axle width. not sure what the max width of tires you can use on a 56, but on my 60, 10" was the max width i could safely use and still have clearence everywhere.. this worked out to a 275R50-15 tire for my application.
first i think you have to determine the size of tire you are using, then what wheel and offset you can get, then mock that up and determine the axle width from there. with that being said you can get most popular wheels with different offsets to move the tire to the position you want. that will probably be easier and cheaper in the long run than getting a custom housing and axles made.
What they said....... choice's , choice's , compromise, and more choice's
whatever you want it to be.... just build backwards!
Can not go wrong with the early 9 inch from a pickup.
Did you see Roadster Shop's rear fender slice and fill, for widening the back of the fender? Pretty slick IMHO. Good Luck on your choice!
