I was doing about 60mph Saturday in my F250 when I heard clunk clunk and my motor died....Sunday I dropped the oil pan and the first thing I pulled out was a push rod...then a wrist pin, piece of piston and a wide variety of pieces and parts
Anyway I am picking up a used motor tomorrow. My plans had already including a full rebuild (possibly to a 400) but I need to be running my truck the next 4 or 5 months till I get the bucks and time.
My question is...would it be worth it, while my replacement motor is hanging in the air...to rebuild some of the bottom end?? Would replacing bearings add a few months to its life or should I just go slow and hope I can build the motor I want before this one gives out. I don't know much about the replacement except that it starts and doesnt smoke tooooo much.
I thank you guys in advance for all your help and comments
btw how the hell did a push rod get waaaaay down there?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Jun-02 AT 06:35 PM (EST)]From the parts list that was in the pan, I think your 351M is just a big beautiful boat anchor.
I may be wrong but I will bet its a lost cause, sorry.
BTW, when the piston let go (wrist pin in the pan) it probably bounced off the valves, hence the pushrod in the pan. Or the small end of the con rod broke the cam,, was there a lifter or 2 in the pan?
I think there was a lifter in the pan...I couldn't see well for the tears lol...anyway I assumed the "blown" motor was junk. I was wondering what quick and dirty things I might do to the "new" motor to keep it running for a while. Would it be worth the $ and time to replace the main bearings?
Here's my problem. Once I tear down the lower end, "I Just Got To Rebuild It"! So If I don't want to spend the money, I don't ever look. I'd rather run a poor runing engine. Then rework one half-***.
