While cutting out the floorboards of my '84 Mustang(351W powered) to install in floor sub frame connectors, dumass me cut one of the brake lines.
At the junk yard, while searching for a complete brake line, I was looking at some old LTD's and Lincolns and the valve cover tag read, " 351/400M engine family"
Just a little useless trivia for ya all. I figure bill will yell at me about something!!!!
LAST EDITED ON 20-Apr-01 AT 09:52 AM (EST)[p]Heh...heh...that's a new one on me too. Wonder how they came up with Mounted? May have to send them an email asking about it. At least they're sharp enough not to call it a 400M.
yea, the 351 m's are modified motors. i had one in my 77 f-150 before we did the swap. always referred to them as modifieds, even at the parts store they asked is it a modified. i never heard of a 351 michigan that's a good one. ( not to criticize ). they always been referred to as the 351 modified. worthless motors my 351 was so bad i ran straight 50 weight oil with, 70 weight aircraft oil mixed to keep the mains from singing.
I don't really think that any engine can be deemed a worthless engine unless you have personally owned the vehicle with the motor in it since it was new. The crap that the previous owner put that mnotor through could have made it worthless.
And comparing the power between an M and a 460 isn't really fair either. Bigger engine - DUH!
Look cj I'll certainly defer to you on your knowledge of the 385 series but just because you and some parts monkeys "always" referred to the 351M as Modified doesn't mean that's what Ford called them. I've had this discussion over and over and I've seen them referred to in print as Modified, Michigan, Montreal, Mexico, Metuchen and the latest one, Mounted. What I've never seen anywhere is a single piece of Ford factory literature which refers to them as anything but M.
To all of you who think you know what the M stands for...
It's METRIC!!! Back when they introduced the M's they stopped
listing them by their cubic inch displacement, and started using
the litre designation.

if this was the case, all motors would have a M behind them, because all motors have a litre designation. 4.9, 5.0, 5.8, 6.6, 7.5.
"Mounted", he said "mounted". (insert Beavis and Butthead laff here). I'm not joining into fray, I just couldn't resist the chance to talk like my 15 year old son!
When one goes to the Ford parts at the Ford dealer and asks for some parts for his 351, the technician, who works for Ford, will ask if it is a Winsor, Cleveland or Modified.
