I have a 76 F150 with a 1983 lincoln 5.0 ( 302 ) with AOD trans. My problem is I can never get it to shift into over drive at the right time and when it does shift into over drive it will not stay in very long so i'm going to replace it with a C4 or C6. My question is what trans is better and what years will I be looking for to do a direct bolt in to the back of my 302. This truck is NOT 4x4 nor is it a daily driver but i want to be able to depend on it when needed. No I do not want rebuild the AOD simplily because from what I hear is that the AOD is not a good trans for a truck. Thanks for any and all input.
Well the c4 and c6 are good trannys. I think the c4 is closer to the same length as the aod. The c6 is known to be a better trans but takes more to turn it. If you want a c6 they started useing them in 1978 and went into the early 90's, you will have to change the flexplate, but make sure you get one that is 50oz imbalance. The c4 was used 77 and earlier. The c4 may work on the same flexplate but i am not 100% sure on that. I think you will also need to get the plate off the back of the engine (plate between engine and trans) that goes with which trans you wil be useing and the starter. Maybe someone will chime in with more info.
The C4 was first used in 1964 and the C6 in 1966. Of course they did not make an appearance into the truck line until the early 70's. Try to at least adjust the linkage for the AOD, then you can go to a C4 with relatively low cost. Of course the shift paterns will be different, so you may want to consider a floor shifter.

Yes, that is correct. What i meant to say is the 302 didn't receive the c6 until 78 in pickups, i don't know about the cars era.

I have and a trans shop has tried to ajust the linkage to no avail, The main reason for this is the rear end is not married to this trans, That is what the trans shop is saying. I already have a floor shifter from a Ford areostar van that I like a lot better than the column shifter. I went to the floor shifter due to the extra gear in the AOD and the 4th gate in the shifter. If the C4 will be strong enough for a truck then I'll hunt one down. Thank you for your input.

1990 Super Duty (7.5l gas) motorhome. Differential problem.
Vehicle has about 120,000 on it now and has only needed occasional topping off of the differential between servicings (latest at 100,000) and no drips noticed on driveway. About 1500 mi ago I noticed that the back of the coach was splattered with oil. Check showed that the differential was over a qt low! I topped it off and checked about 100 miles down the road and found it down about a pint, topped off and continued, adding between a pint and a qt every couple hundred miles. Also noticed that when I removed the cap, the differential was presurized and was blowing oil out the front oil seal. I thought these things were vented (my Ranger is), but I'm unable to find the vent to check if it is plugged. Between the last trip (to Ak) and this the rig was sitting in my yard near StMichaels for several monhts, an area populated by mud daubber wasps, so I am suspicious!!!
