I'm finally getting around to putting an engine in that hunk of rolling junk. But I need help on where to get one at. It has a 4 banger in it now which is for the most part, shot to hell. After over a year of sitting its gonna feel wierd driving it. But anyway,Is there somewhere good online I can get one or a good salvage yard in Houston where I can either see it run or at least give it a good look over and know something about it other then its still in one piece. It needs to be reliable because I'm driving it across Texas to my next duty station. (hopefully)
Would it perhaps be worth looking for another cheap car? I helped my buddies mom track down a engine and tranny for her 93 Camry. Things go for a pretty penny around here, well over 1000 bucks for every engine we looked at. Didn't find one with under 150,000 miles on it.
Something about those weird foreign cars, junkyards seem to think their parts are made of gold.

Given its age, I wouldn't put an engine in it unless it was free or dirt cheap and the rest of the car was exceptionally nice. Camry engines tend to be high since they are popular.
If I were PCSing, I'd do a do-it-yourself move and pay for some of my replacement ride that way.
Dunno which service you are in, but the USAF will pay for self-moves if you own or rent or borrow a pickup truck. PCSing back to CONUS also means you can apply for advance pay (yay for interest free money!) if you need it, and take extended repayment (see regs for justification).
Anyway, enjoy the soju and juicies while ya can!
Even at salvage sales the donor cars tend to be high. It would likely be cheaper to buy a damaged car with a good engine from a private party. When you get a donor car you can gut other goodies out of it, and either sell it or call any scrap hauler to drag it off when you are done.
