hey, i have a 2001 Ranger Edge with a 7.5 inch 3.73 L/S rear end and when im dirving i hear a noise under the truck almost like metal ***** being clicked together, sometimes it does it sometimes not and it does not matter what speed i am going, as well the noise does not stay constent it go slow clicking then fast clicking without changing speed, i notice that it starts to do it when i have a rough start letting the clutch up to fast i was just wondering if anyone knows what is causeing the clicking i dont think it is my u joints cause i can grab the drive shaft and twist and there is no play im wondering if it is my pinion bearing or some other rear end bearing... if anyone can please help.
U-Joint don't need to have play or be loose to be bad! The only sure way to check u-joints is to remove the drive shaft and move them by hand.
My guess would be one of your joints being gaulded in one direction and free moveing in the other. That would give you a slight popping sound and a slight vibration while accelerating or slowing down.
this sound is almost like a ball is missing out of a bearing and the other ***** are clicking into each other and going around the bearing housing but i dont know if there is a ball bearing in the rear end or if it is a needle bearing
I would still check the joints first. I have had u-joints go bad and make different noises each time and sometimes no noise at all and just a vibration.
I wouldn't rule out the differential, though i would rule out the cheapest and easiest parts first.
