i finally got around to pulling the frozen up 400 out of my 78. the clutch and flywheel where really nasty. they went straight into the junk metal bin. totally rusted together. i thought that was my problem, but the engine still wont turn over. All i want off the engine is the 4 barrel Holley carb, and the Holley intake manifold, and the headers. What should i do with the rest of the engine. I dont want it,,or i mean i dont need it! Is it worth anything, anywhere?
I BELIEVE THE BLOCK IS OK, BUT I DONT KNOW HOW TO TELL BY LOOKING AT IT. WHEN IT RAN LAST, IT DIDNT LEAK OR HAVE ANY PROBS THAT I COULD SEE. AS FAR AS THE CRANK, I DONT GUESS I KNOW. IM NOT A MECHANIC, NOR DO I KNOW ALLOT ABOUT ENGINES. WHAT ARE YOU REFERRING TO WHEN YOU SAY CRANK? THE CRANK SHAFT? IF SO, I DONT KNOW BECUASE I HAVENT BUSTED INTO THE ENGINE YET. ALL I KNOW IS THAT I CANT TURN IT OVER WITH A 1/2" DRIVE SOCKET ON A BREAK OVER BAR. ITS DEFINATLY SIEZED UP.
FOR WHAT ITS WORTH, I HAVE NO USE FOR THE CAB, ITS PRETTY RUSTY, BUT THE ENGINE COMPARTMEN IS IN GOOD SHAPE, AND THE INTERIOR HAS SOME USEFUL PARTS.
i got to thinking last night about the crank Whiteon, and it should be ok because when i pull the dipstick out, there is only black oil, which leads me to believe that there is no water in the crank case. I believe that the pistons are siezed up, and thats whats causing the prob. so to answer you question, i believe the crank is good, and block too. it will prbly need some machining, but its still good. let me know something.
