Hey C'mon I know there is a code trick

Hey guys. I am trying to get the trouble codes off of my '93 Ranger without having to buy a reader or a multi-meter. I read a post by Green 94 Ranger that he hooks up a wire to his negative battery terminal and the codes blink out on the dash. Can anyone please tell me how to do this with a little more detail? Like where the terminal is? I have been able to do this on many other makes of cars and trucks, I just don't know how to do it on this one. I have done quite a few searches trying to figure this out, and read the technical posts, but no luck.

Thanks in advance.

Well, eec-iV lets you pull codes with CEL blinking. You can install small switch inside cabine to see and clear codes from inside your truck...

Hey thanks, you guys all rock

I retrieved some codes; do these seem like codes I could get get? 116 and 177. I get them both twice right in a row...116..116..177..177

It is weird, it seems like I am getting 116..116..1..177..177. What do I do with the extyra digit? I also assume the dull flicker in the beginning is not a flash as it is not as bright as the rest of the codes flashes?

These are all only KOEO codes so far

Thanks again!!

Sounds like you did it right. Code descriptions can be found here:

http://www.tccoa.com/articles/misc/EEC4.html

The 116 code can be set (and often is) if the engine is not up to operating temperature when the codes are pulled.

The 177 code means either bank 2 (driver's side) of the motor is running rich, or the 02 sensor on that side is failing.

Hey okay, I did pull the codes when the engine was cold, as was I and my freezing feet!! There is like over a foot of snow on the ground here and around 10 F.

What could cause the engine to be running rich on the one side of the engine other than that O2 sensor? It does seem like it could be running rich. It is hard to start and it feels like it is missing while I am driving it. I guess maybe it could be fouled plugs on that side? It sucks that I have to work on it outside in this freezing wheather, but I guess that I should be thankful that hopefully it is not anything too serious?

I was hoping that pulling the KOEO codes would tell me exactly what I should do to fix the prob! Do you guys think I should do the KOER test on it? I am just learning this OBD system, don't know if that would make a difference or not.

Thanks again

There are few things that will cause a rich or lean condition on only one bank. A bad injector on that side could do it, but I can't really think of anything else. That's why the 02 sensor is suspect.

How many miles on the truck, and when is the last time it was tuned up?

Hey, truck is running great now. I did all of the plugs and the O2 sensor on that side. Going to drive it around for awhile and check the codes again. The only other thing it does is that it doesn't start right up. It doesn't take super long, but longer than it should take to have the crank sensor go all of the way around.

Anyway,

Thanks a bunch. Maybe I will teach the guys at Autozone and Napa how to get the codes as they told me there was no way to do it without a special reader that they also didn't sell!

Did you disconnect the battery for a while to clear the codes?

I disconnected briefly, how long do I need to disconnect it for? Arrgh, everything was running great but now my AC compressor seems to have frozen up somehow; if I get the shorter belt for the non AC 3.0 will I be able to just bypass the AC compressor? Need the truck for work!!
