hey guys, have a 86 f-150 that originally came with the 300/6 carb, auto want to know how hard it would be to change to a carbed 302 from 84-85, or maybe change to an older 302 without all the computer mess. how hard of a swap would it be to not use a computer controlled engine? what issues may i have as far as running lights, fuel tank sender etc??? any help would be appreciated and will have pics of truck soon. no rust at all, beautiful straight body and o.k interior will need dashpad and seat(torn) but is tan with rubber floor.
thanks for all the help!!
Just get some frame brackets from a v8 truck, install them and then bolt the 302 in. If you get one of those new fangled 1 wire distributors, then that's all you need to get the ignition going. Your fuel system should be ready to go, since you have a carbed engine right now.
I think there are a few other things you need to swap, like maybe the radiator and the throttle cable.
what about the body wiring (lights, radio and so on) have a v-8 radiator in it now. have found a 427 cobra jet and trans in a wrecking yard in a 77. how much work would it be to wire ignition? i can do alot of mechanical stuf like swapping like for like but when it gets to wiring i think i should be able to take care of it just need a little help as electrical isnt my strongest point
The engine has nothing to do with the radio and the lights.
Your first post said a 302 swap. That's not that hard. A "cobra jet 427" is not going to bolt in. You should stay with an engine that came originally in these body style trucks. The only other engine you are going to be able to swap in easily is a 351w. Otherwise you will have to change the tranny, and like I said, some of the older engines are not a bolt in.
