what is the best way to tell what transmission i have in my 83 f-150.its 4 speed with granny gear

Does your truck have a tag on the driver door that indicates what the trans code may be. I am not too familiar with the newer trucks so forgive me if this is off base...

all 3 are good but the t19 is more desirable because of the syncronized 1st gear but you might not have any of them you might have a od 4spd which is not as strong as the others

OK, must be T18 or NP435
NP435 has aluminum top cover, T18 iron.
Where is reverse:
Hard R and UP = T18
Hard R and DOWN = NP435

it right and down so it np435 is that a fairly tough model

yes very tough all 3 t18/19 are good

My T-18 is down & right for reverse. I know it changed at one point, but I thought it was earlier than '83.

I got the shift pattern from another site that won't post here. Think "ford" and (edu)cation".
