a 44 will live OK with 38s if you are not stupid. Expect accelerated wear on your balljoints, and steering. Maintenance is the key, along with good driving skills. If mud is all you do, a 44 is ok.
Unless it's a crewcab or crewcab front axle it's a d44 that said there were two different d44's available for the f250 in 75 one rated at 3000 lbs gawr and one rated at 3550 lbs gawr they both had drum brakes and are the closed knuckle design the 3000 lbs axle had small tapered hubs like a f150 the 3550 lbs axle had the large non-tapered spicer hub but like was said beford for mud and normal trail rides a d44 is ok for places where wheel spin to solid hookup is possible or the possibility of "catching air" you'll want a d60 high pinion from a 78-79 or later I have d44hds in both of my highboys and have run 14.5 x 36.5s and 12.5 x 35s without any trouble but they don't see any really hard use anymore.

I think the 7700 lbs GVW package was a d60 low pinion front. Thats what it lists for the axle code on my 75. Don't remember the axle rating.
It will mostly be mud and sand, it should be fine if im easy on it, eventually i would like to upgrade to the d60 with discs on the front, but thats when money lets me
also, with a 6" suspension lift do i need to lengthen drive shafts, or is that an issue? i think i am going to run 37"s instead of 38"s
7700 was the light front axle 3000 pounder 8400 had the 3550 and ONLY crewcab came with a low pinion d60
Go figure, but my 75 f250 7700 gvw, 133" wb,regular F262 cab has an axle code of 24P7 on the door which according to page 10-00-7 of my 1975 Ford Truck Shop manual says it is D60 front and rear with a 4.10 ratio and power steering, the door sticker says it is a 3550 axle rating on the front (also conincides with the GAWR for a D60 on the front. The hubs are over 4 inch diameter as compared to about 3 1/2 on the D44 on my 78 It most definitely is a LOW pinion (pinion is below the differential center line). Not trying to start anything, but you seem pretty sure of your answer so maybe you can explain it.
My 75 F250 has a 7700 gvw and it has the 3550 pound dana 44 under it.
Are you sure it is the original axle and that is a 44? According to the book the Dana 44 was a 3000 lb rating. Axle code would be a Q8 for power steering, The 3300 axle shows as a Dana 60 code R9
