I haven't had to use my 4 wheel drive much in the last 2 years in New Jersey. But the 2 times I used it in the last 2 years, I had the same problem. After driving about 5 miles in 4 wheel auto, the indicator lights ( 4 wheel auto & 4 wheel low ) flash on & off. Even after switching to 2 wheel they continue to flash until I shut off the truck & restart. Does anyone know what causes this fault. Thank you.
YES, the position sensor plat inside the shift motor is tarnished, doesnt make good contact and gets confused, to maintain them you have to shift to 4L at least every second week.....
After reading through the service manual, it appears that the speed sensors inside the transfer case are the problem. I will have to check the sensors electrically. I hope that we don't get more snow, where I will need 4wd.

FWIW, have never found the hale sensors to behave as you describe, even when they load up with crap from the T/C.
They are easy to take out and clean/check
