Today I had to turn my 4 wheel drive on to get out of a big leaf pile. Engaged both manual hubs and used manual shifter and put it into 4 wheel drive. After getting free, which worked fine, I put shifter back to 2 wheel drive and unlocked the hubs. I immediately heard a grinding noise. I engaged both hubs again and still heard it. Then I turned both hubs off again, still heard noise. So I tried the reverse and forward thing a couple of times and that did nothing. I drove a little while then I heard a LOUD clank and now its a much louder noise.
Now when I try going reverse the back wheels lock up. This has me rather concerned. Why would the back wheels lock up?
Other notes worth mentioning
1. New transmission 2 years ago, only has about 25,000 miles on it. Don't think its that.
2. New manual shifter (shifter to change between 4 wheel drive and 2 wheel drive) last winter.
Is my differential broken? What could the problem be?
Problem fixed! You won't believe it, lol. My mechanic called me today telling me the parking brake pad in the rear tire broke off and was grinding in the wheel. I told him what happened prior to me hearing the grinding noise and he said I must have put enough force on it when I was stuck to break it off. Unbelievable! Anyway, he checked the whole drivetrain and said everything is in good shape.
If you live north of the Twin Cities I highly recommend Isanti Tire and Auto in Isanti, MN. They are real honest and do good work.
