CB mounting location?

Where do you guys mount your CB radios and how do you mount them? Just looking foir ideas. I have an '86 F-250 extended cab. I have a power inverter mounted on my trans tunnel, and that will need to be moved to the drivers side extended cab wall next to the rear seat, as I am doing a ZF5 swap soon and anything mounted on top of the tunnel will likely interfere with the shifter.

I'm thinking maybe mount it up top and center. Anyone mount it up there? If so how did you mount it? I believe the roof of our trucks are two thin layers of steel, so short self tappers through the inner layer? My truck does have a headliner, so that may make a difference.

Any other good spots to mount?

well I will say this please dont screw the part you clip the mic on to right to the darn dash. Someone did this to my crew cab and it drives me crazy. A perfect interior except for 2 big screw holes right to the right of the insterment panel. What a crazy thing to do. I say do it under the dash to the left of the ash tray.

The only problem with that location is depending upon how big of a CB you have it can interfer with getting to the gas pedal sometimes. And you can hit your knees/legs on it too if your pretty tall.

A buddy of mine got a concussion and some staples from the CB he mounted to the roof when his van rolled. The CB in my 150 was mounted under the dash by a p/o. It hasn't bothered me in the least. I can't say how convenient it is or isn't to use, as the antenna mast is missing and I've never bothered with it.

Can't mount it under the dash on the drivers side as I am tall (6'4") and when I sized it up it would interfere with my legs. Ash tray is in the way of mounting in center under the dash, and as stated I can't mount it to the floor as it will most likely interfere with the shifter.

I think the roof may be the best location. Hitting my head on it isn't a major concern as I wear my seatbelt when wheeling so I shouldn't end up with my head in the middle front of the cab ceiling. I don't spend my time worrying aobut safety... When my time comes it comes, death by CB would be interesting I suppose.

Another thought was to cut out the little cubby in the instrument cluster to the lower right of the steering wheel. Maybe I can squeeze it in there?

Cutting/drilling anything in my truck doesn't bother me at all. It's a truck and will be used as such. I have my classic cars for nice weather transportation in a nice comfortable vehicle.

One of my buddies has his mounted in his Samurai on the passenger side under the dash and I would find that annoying to heave to reach that far to adjust anything.

So far it seems like roof is the best option. Thanks for the article, helpful tips there. Any thoughts on the dash cubby install? Anyone done one there or should I just go for the cab ceiling?

I've also seen them on the top of the dash. Just a thought...

I agree not enough leg room (6'4" as well) and I dont like them on the dash. Just dont really look good in my opinion. Besides as long as you wont be rolling your truck anytime soon I dont see any problem with installing it on the roof.

When I did my ZF swap I also swapped in bucket seats and a center console. My CB was on the floor, but now is attached to the front of my console. Here's a pic, and dont laugh at my ricer shift ****, it makes a real handy flashlight since I can just unscrew it real quick.

That's a clever mounting location. Easily accessible and looks good there. Unfortunately that won't work for me as I have the factory bench seat. I prefer a bench so won't be swapping. I wonder though, if I could mount it to the center of the front bench, like basically same spot as yours is. Since I have an extended cab it would be very rare for anyone to sit in the middle front. Hmm... Just thinking out loud.

What about mounting it to the floor in front of the seat but with a bracket that has longer arms so it can sit vertically.
