I just bought a 1987 ford ranger with a built 302 with a c4 trans, B&M shifter, and posi front and back. The truck has 2000 on the drivetrain total. I was turning on to a road and i got up to 15MPH then all of a sudden the transmission seemed to pop out of gear, and it will not go forward no matter what gear i put it in or even if i rev it up. It has reverse, and the fluid is good. I saw underneath it seemed to have a little fluid where the tans and transfer case connect. I even had it running, then went underneath and manually shifted the gears right at the transmission and nothing but reverse. This is a clean and powerful truck, and it totally took me by surprise. Does anyone know what could possibly be wrong. Oh and i wasn't doing burn outs with it or beating it.
check the pan for shavings if you don't have any, maybe it is your transfer case i had that problem in my truck. but it sounds like your trans is gone.
Yup, pull the pan and see whats in it.
You said the fluid is good, does that mean clean? I had a trans where the filter was so dirty fluid would not pass through it causing no forward gears.
It does sound as though it's not long for this world w/o an overhaul.
First off? A moderator might want to relocate this to the correct forum area. (Truck is a few years older for this, as we deal mainly with '73-'79) However let's see if we can be of help anyway :-)
Can you shift to manual first gear (on the shifter, all the way to "Low-1" or "L") Reason I ask is the transmissions use a one way roller clutch for first gear. That locks down part of the gear set, instead of using the band/clutch for that purpose. Now if you shift all the way down to first gear (not drive---but all the way down to first) And all the sudden the transmission engages? The one-way clutch is blown.
More then likely you'll wind up pulling the pan and inspecting the filter and the bottom of the pan. I have a feeling it will have quite a bit of metal shavings in it. It really does sound like an internal fault.
