Awhile Back About(650 Miles Ago) Dropped The Pan On My 97 Transmission And Replaced The Filter. The Catch Is Instead Of Mercon V That The Dipstick Calls For I Used Mercon/dextron Multipurpose Fluid From Oreillys.i Have Had 0 Problems From The Tranny But Have Read That I Eventually Will.i Haven't Found A Transmission Shop Around Here That Even Uses Mercon V And Only One With The Additive That Converts The Old Stuff To Mercon V. I Am Considering Going To A Synthetic Fluid And Doing A Complete Tranny Flush. Any Advice Or Opinions.
Welcome. You might try buying Mercon V off the shelf from an auto parts store or maybe even Walmart. Then bring it with you to a place that has a tranny flush machine and tell them to use your Mercon V instead of their house fluid. You can probably even get them to discount the flush since most of the cost is in the fluid anyway.
Do not get it flushed with a flush machine. That is a total waste of money and there is potential for transmission damage. The transmission has its own pump and can flush itself safely. The method on how to do it I believe can be found in the Ranger sticky. Many flush machines force fluid through passages and the can damage seal in the valve body. When you flush it using its own internal pump you do not expose the transmission to anything it doesn't experience during ordinary driving. I would recommend doing this yourself if none of the shops even carry Mercon V. This tells me that they are too cheap to do it right.
I had my '02 4.0 SOHC 5spd auto flushed/filter change and I had them add Amsoil ATF. I brought it with me and they gave me a discount on the job. It's not something that made a big difference in performance but the shifts are a little bit more crisp.
