Transmission Rough Shifting when cold

I have a 2007 Ford Ranger with only 12000 km (automatic). On cold mornings when shifting from reverse to drive it takes up to 5 seconds to engage in drive. Also when coming to a stop on a cold moring (the first stop sign I get to is only a couple of hundred feet away), it seems that the transmission does not fully downshift into first. When I hit the gas it jumps back down into first. When I hit the thrid stop sign, it downshifts into first but you can really feal it downshifting into first. After it warms up, all the issues above go away. Anyone else have these same issues.

I've got an 03 that has trouble shifting from reverse to drive on the first shift when it's really cold, but after that it's good to go. I've noticed that on the really cold days, if I let the truck run for a minute or two before I take off it won't do it. Something to think about.

BTW welcome to the forums

Welcome to FTE.

Seeing as how this is a new vehicle & likely still under warranty, I'd make this Fords problem.

You paid BIG bucks for that bumper-to-bumper warranty, in the vehicles purchase price, so now is the time to make good use of it & get this problem documented.

Just in case there are related problems down the road, you can show a documented pre-existing condition.

I've had similiar sounding problems on both my 99 Rangers 5R55E & 94 Taurus AXODE trannies & both seemed to have been deposit related, which I doubt yours is.
So let the Dealer unravel this problem.

Just some thoughts to ponder.

Thanks. Great forum with lots of useful information.

Only issue with taking it to the Ford dealer is I am out of a truck for 1 1/2 days as it would have to sit overnight as that seems to be the only time it happens. I had already brought it in and they just topped it up with more transmission fluid, which I can't figure out as it is practically new with no heavy hauling. I had read of simular issues with Ford transmissions and thought it may just be a 'trait' when they are cold.

Looks like back to the dealership I go...

Your dealership should have a "loaner" program to supply transportation if they have to keep it for a couple of days. Mine did or me.

Make friends with & talk to your Dealers Service Manager, bet he'll arrange something.

Let us know how it goes & what they find.

They had to 're-flash' the computer to fix the transmission issue. I will know if it worked after the first cold day. Also brought it in for a clunk in the steering.....I need new inner tie rod ends. Pretty sad for only 12,000 km, not impressed or too sure about the reliability of the Ranger so far. Oh well, at least all under warranty.

That's pretty odd for rangers actually, they're pound for pound one of the toughest trucks out there. Make sure you keep a record of what you've had done so far, I hate to say it but you might possibly have a lemon

Ya, funny you say that as I have that exact same feeling. Both issues were service buletins that were issued affecting 'some' Rangers. I think the fact that I had always said I would never own a Ford may come back to haunt me. After 14 non Ford cars/trucks I now own two Fords (Mustang as well). Don't get me wrong I love them both, but just a family thing that we have never owned Fords, and I broke the trend.....

Steady as she goes here, lets all think this through some.

I too had serious problems with my then new, special order 99 Ranger, such that the Dealer/Factory said replace the engine with a new factory crate motor, one month after delivery.

Then a month & a half after that, the new engine suddenly developed a coolant sipping problem, so they decided to replace the head gaskets & that didn't do it, so they replaced the heads on that new replacement engine.

That didn't do it, so they replaced the head gaskets again, still under warranty, in 02, with "Revised" head gaskets & to date that seems to have FINALLY fixed the problem. lol

Why all the detail, point is my Dealer & the Engine Factory, that was footing the repair bills, stepped up to the plate, they never balked or tried to run away from my problems & as long as they were working the problem/s, I just decided to bite my lip & try to be patient & work with them.

It took a while to unravel the coolant sipping problem, (from 99 to 02) but they finally ran it down & put it all right & without hesitation or resistance!!!!

EVERY Dealer has a Service Department for a reason, enven Toyota!!!!

You don't think they have problems, if you go to make a service appointment, you don't see their Techs sitting around like the Maytag repairman, with nothing to do!!!!

Locally it'll require a 4-5 day wait for service @ the local Toyota Dealer.

Had a guy at work with a nice brand new, top of the line 4X4 Tacoma, who's engine blew BAD, shortly after Delivery, lots of damage!!!!
The danged local Toyota Dealer & Factory gave him plenty of grief on repair, such that he had to hire counsel & threaten legal action, to get them reluctenty moving to fix it, which they finally did months later.

Point is, every Manufacturer has problems now & then, some step up to the plate & work the problems without hesitation, some don't, just bite our tongue & try to work with them, if that doesn't get results, then break out the Legal Hammer & use it!!!! lol

I did not want to fork over what they wanted for a new Tacoma. I would pay over $4000 more for the Tacoma, not to mention $1000 free accessories and interest free financing when I bought the Ranger. What bugs me is the fact the Ranger is not exactly a new model working out some 'bugs', it has been around for a long time with few major changes. By now they should have worked out all of quality/reliability issues. Then again mabe my truck was built on a Monday or Friday

You never know, anything possible after all. Not to mention that Ford doesn't make every part that goes into the truck, maybe the supplier let some defective parts slip out of the factory, and them ending up on your truck is karma for considering a yota

Yota's are a good truck with a big price tag. The Ranger is a great truck for a low price tag.
