Ok, now yall are going to think "how stupid can this guy really be, but here we go!
A friend loaned me a timing light to check the timing on my 360. I know what to hook where, one on red on pos., black on neg, other on #1 wire, I'm pretty sure I need to put a mark on 0 or TDC on the balancer, I know that to advance turn dist. clockwise. My problem is I don't know exactly what I'm supposed to look for on the balancer as it is turning. The light has a dial and my friend said "put the dial where you want it to be timed at". He's unavailable to ask this stupid question now.
If I set the dial at for instance 12, will the mark on the balancer still be on the marker and the truck be timed at 12?
How can I find out what it is timed at now? I've watched guys do this years ago, but never actually tried it myself and feel really silly asking!
Loaded for bear and not enough info to blow up a fly!
no the mark will be at zero if you turn the dial to 12.
disconnect the vacuum line going to dis start and slowly turn the dial on the timing light til the pointer is at zero what ever the dial says thats where the timing is
Find out what your timing should be set at. If you set dial to 12 hold light toward blancer and timing indicator. Advance/Retard dist. until mark on balancer lines up with timing indicator. That puts your timing to 12. I'm sure someone else will also have a more in-depth explanation for you too.
Edit: As Cykotic says the mark on the balancer and indicator point to zero. But your intial timing is set at 12. That is how I understand it. When I set mine at 6 or 8, I forget which, we set dial on light at 6 and when you look at balancer it read TDC. But my initial timing on truck is 6 like it is supposed to be.
