92 Steering Column Replacement
This "surgury" requires care... you can easily fire it in your face if you aren't careful. But here is what I did.
I removed the four nuts on the back of teh wheel that holds the airbag in place, then wiggled it out. I disconnected the connector, which is self shorting, which is supposed to prevent the bag from firing when not installed.
I carefully drilled out all the rivets around the perimeter of the BACK of the air bag - removing the rubbery horn pad from the metal chassis behind it.
Then I drilled out all the rivets that hold the air bag onto the metal chassis, then fired the air bag on the lawn so this way I could toss it in the trash and not worry about the safety of my garbage men.
The then slipped the rubbery cover back over the metal chassis, and re-riveted it back in place, then reinstalled the pad onto the steering wheel. It looks flawless as if I've done nothing, yet there's no exploding-bag-of-gas sitting there waiting to kill me, since my truck has no circuitry to fire air bags anyway.
