shifting linkage stuck

The diesel I bought today when we got it home to get it off the tow truck the truck will only go into park and reverse. When we put it on the tow truck I put it in neutral and let him pull it on up but that wasnt the story when it was time to take it off, we started it and will only go far enough to go in reverse. It feels like its hitting on something in the column. The ignition switch is bad you can turn it all the way to start it but does nothing thats why we have to turn the key on then use a push button. Could the problem be the ignition switch making it do that?

Also could the ignition switch make the buzzer go off when the headlights are turned on? Acting like the truck is in the off mode and the warning buzzer thinks you just forgot the headlights..Thanks guys

Did he tow it with the rear wheels on the ground, and the transfer case not in neutral? If so, the tranny may be ruined now if it was towed very far.

now it was pulled on a rollback. it feels like when you try to shift it, it is catching on something in the column. When we pulled it on rollback it was in neutral.

There is a pot metal piece in the column that breaks on these trucks. This piece is what actuates the ignition switch(the reason for the pushbutton start) and also unlocks the column so it will shift. If you take the shroud off the column, you can stick a screwdriver up in the passenger side near the cluster, and move the little pot metal piece which will let it shift. You can go to the dealer and buy the little piece and take the column apart and install it to fix both problems.

alright thanks. man i was worried when you said my transmission was messed up....that wouldn't be the problem right?

Could it of broke when he shifted it into neautral when he had it on the roll back, because he had the rollback tilted back and there would be pressure on the transmission shifting and linkage because of the truck weight? You think that is when it may of broke?

They break because they are a potmetal piece of junk Ford design. They sell bucket loads of these things at the dealer.

Piece #15 in the left picture in this link is the one that breaks all the time.
