Arrow Plugs Keep Fouling!!!

Hey again...

Okay, my last post involved a bad shaking in the engine. I took it to a mechanic and he found 3 plugs that were not firing. He fixed that and all was well... until it happened again just 2 1/2 weeks later.

I stalled on the way to work( cold and rainy this morning). When I finally got it restarted, a huge black puff of smoke came out and I was able to chug to work. Changed the plugs at work so I could get home, was running great but about halfway there it started acting up again.

I did notice that the climatic choke cover was missing a screw and the other two were loose. Also my butterfly never opens completely. By the way, it seems to run ok on warmer days.

I have begun converting to a manual choke. Do you think this will correct my problem or should I look elsewhere? This week I've gone through 7 gals. in a whopping 48 miles!

Any help is always greatly appreciated! Thanks again.

Jeff

Uh, this may be a long shot but maybe ....... your choke is stuck closed?

It's not stuck closed, I can move it and all the linkage is there. It just never opens up. That's why I'm trying the manual choke. Not sure if the climatic choke is working at all.

That's what I meant as in "not opening" = "stuck closed". Not literally stuck, just not opening correctly.....

It sounds like the carb is freezing up in damp weather. The frost builds up inside the carb and makes it run rich. The best way to fix this is to run the original aircleaner with the air pipe hooked up to the exhaust manifold. This will draw warm air up into the carb and keep this from happening.

If the screws on the cover were loose and one missing, you know it's out of adjustment. Try adjusting to specs or just back it off. I had to do that once with my 86. Just left the choke backed off takes a little to warm up but, works ok.

I switched the choke with a manual one and it's running great again!
Thanks for all your helpful suggestions.
I guess she'll live a little longer.

Why didn't you just FIX the one you had?

All you needed to do was replace the missing screw and adjust it.

It kills me that people would rather throw away Monet than take just a little time and fix something right.

When I got my current '83, the previous owner had removed a carb that needed to be rebuilt, and replaced it with a Holley that had no automatic choke. He then had to install a choke lever and ****, and all associated crap. Yes, it ran like crap, too.

I got it. Bought a $45 automatic choke kit from Holley for the carb. Removed all the extra junk, and it runs vastly better, and starts easily on cold days.

Some guys just dont want to be shown how to fix something. I think he wanted a manual choke from the get go.
