New Explorer Owner. Have owned Ford 4x4's for decades but this is our first Explorer. So far we have replaced the front bearings (72K miles) and the noise is still there. More pronounced when in 4x4 lock or in cold morning in auto. Sounds like a bad CV but do not see alot of CV issues on board.
How about front driveshaft issues? What is a good troubleshooting procedure? Does this truck monitor wheel speed and lock accordingly when auto and lock up when put in lock? Is this done in the transfer case only? I assume the front shaft is locked to the front differential and the truck coasts with the front axles driving the front shaft UNTIL there is a speed change and then the driving comes from the transfer case to the front axle?
Maybe the transfer case "control" thinks the truck needs 4 wheel lock?
Am I on the right track?
Thanks!
