Broken axle shaft

Sorry this might be long. I suspected the front differential of my 96 Explorer AWD was going bad. Pulled the front driveshaft, differential, and axle shafts so I could drive in 2WD while fixing the diff. Week later, the driverside front wheel fell off at 50mph. Apparently axleshafts hold the front bearing housing together. Replaced all front end components with new stuff (ball joints, brakes, left side spindle, rebuilt differential, and new axle shafts). After 3 miles, the right side outer CV joint blew its guts. My question is: is there an improper way to install the axleshaft that would cause it to break? and, did driving the truck in 2WD for a week, possibly have messed up the transfer case? I'm thinking that it might have been possible to fry the transfer case by causing it to constantly lock up for the whole week and now that everything is reinstalled it is still locked up and overloading the driveline when turning which is destroying the CV joint. Any help is greatly appreciated. Trying CV joint #2 today.
