the best pain killer I've found, better than the prescription stuff I've had, is three advil liquigels and two tylenol. My dentist turned me on to it after a root canal. Kicks in in about 15 minutes and knocks out all but my worst pains. Plus advil is an NSAID (Non-Steriodal Anti-Inflamatory Drug) and will help with any inflamed nerves or what have ya.

I am 55, and have worked in house building all my life. I am about 25 lbs over weight.
But, I am in good shape. I hike, I shoot, I walk. I am active.

This last Thanksgiving, I woke up and could not get out of bed. My back was in total stress. After five days my doc subcsribed me drugs, that did not work. I finally got up and walked. It hurt like hell! I walked more the next day. In a few days I walked up a hill. I kept walking.
Do not stop. You have to get over the pain, and go on. If you don't, the outcome will be bad!

go see an orthopedic Dr. it may be as simple as a few trips to physical therapy or ...well i'll not go into or.
i'm not shooting anyone down, but drugs mask symptoms. they never heal them.
let's just say..been there, done this!

I've been through several extended sessions where I was completely unable to walk or function from lower back pain. Had one surgery, begged off the second, & been to intensive physical therapy several times. In the end it always took time to heal.

Helps to know if your pain is muscular or nerve related...the former is more constant pain while the latter is usually abrupt sharp pain. Never went the chiropractor route because of wife's bad experiences. I'd talk to a physical therapist about a custom tailored exercise routine...go slow at first but stay with it...keep moving as much as you can. Pulling your knees to your chest is always a good one.
Once stabilized you might consider yoga but some of those moves can put you right back in traction! Hang in there!

lol, vicoden and beer

yeah i was bending over at the waist trying to hold up my bimini top on my lower back and trying to get my trolling motor out from underneath the bimini top. didnt hurt that day, but ever since that day about 3 weeks ago now, my lower back everyday is hurting. it hurts most in the morning, and when i get up out of the seat, or sitting down, or getting out of bed hurts the most.

i started walking over the weekend, ( i had furball's image of a pair of walking shoes inmy mind), trying tolose about 20 pounds wont hurt either, probably help the back, but i will continue to stretch and take some meds, and if this dont work down the road, ill see someone about it.

Sorry to hear that you're having back pain.

Here's some tips that I have learned, since messing up my back in '91.

Don't sleep on a soft mattress. If your mattress is soft, sleep on the floor, or, put a piece of 3/4" plywood between your mattress and boxspring.
(I slept on the floor for over a year! It made a world of difference!)
I wound up buying a 'Select Comfort' (Sleep Number) bed.
Wow!!!! It's incredible! (My number is 85 to 100!)
IF you can sleep on your back, do so. Put a couple of pillows under your knees to press your spine flat and take tension off of the knees.

Lay or lie down (whichever is correct usage) on the floor, in front of your couch, with your legs on the couch, where your rear-end would normally be.
Your rear-end should be where your legs would be, and your head is where your feet should normally be.
I've heard this being called the "Fowler" position.
You should be looking up, toward the ceiling. Arms by your sides.
Stay in this position for about 15 to 30 minutes.
Doing this will press your spine flat, onto the floor and should give you some relief.

When you get up from the bed, or the couch/sofa, etc., start by rolling onto your side, then tuck your knees up like you are getting into the fetal position, then swing your legs down to the floor, and using your arms, push yourself up to the sitting position.
This will keep your spine more supported and straight(er).

No problem. None at all.

When I messed up my back, I lost a year and a half from work.

I had two really good doctors taking care of me.
I had a 'cheat sheet' around here, somewhere, that has a lot of good information about sitting up, laying down, exercises, etc., and not aggrivating your back.

If I can find it, I'll post it. I think my wife put it in the file cabinet, downstairs.
If that's the case, it'll be found in another 100 years or so.

I have four "buldged" discs from an auto accident. When my back nags at me I use a rolled bath towel and place it under my lower back while I lay on the floor. It stretches out the muscles. Move the towel up and down your spinal column as needed. It's only a temorary fix, but it helps.

Use a regular size towel, roll it TIGHTLY so it won't collapse under your body weight, hold it together with a couple strips of duct tape.

Good luck.

I'd try ibuprofen or naproxen to kill the pain and heat to sooth it.

word of advice...GET HELP NOW!!!!! im only 25 and live in constant pain. i injured my back to the point my spine is twisted all sorts of wierd ways. i didnt get help because i thought o well its just a pulled muscel. i was in the navy and had a drawer full of 800 ibprophens. they helped. 2 years later i found out muscles spasims cause my spine to twist and now have scoliosis. the only way to fix it now is fuse the virtibras together of put a titianium bar in my back and take muscle relaxors the rest of my life. not gonna happen i have kids i wanna be able to play with them. im too young not to bend over. but i live with a pain thats become tolerable on some days and other i dont want to get out of bed.

sorry for the long post but i want to make sure you understand that if its been a few weeks and it doesnt go away get help before you end up like me.

what to do for lower back ache

  • Make sure "she" is on top.....
  • And remember ..."better living thru drugs".

Advice can be used in tandem or in single applications.

Find a real chinese accupuncturist and tell them all your pains and where they are at
and they will knock it out. I had recurring bursitis in my shoulder that was injured in
my head on collision (ironically from the seatbelt) Every now and then I would move
wrong or my shoulder would pop out of socket and I would have to slam it back in.
Finally after 3 weeks of constant pain and barely using it I went to a massage therapist kind of helped. I finally called a accupuncturist and went there expecting a
big bunch of hokem and crap but they said what is wrong and had me lay down and
put like 30 needles in my shoulder, hooked it up to a electrolysis machine and a infra red lamp, after 20 minutes she said I was done come back in 1 week. I thought great
here we go get me coming back again and again, It actually started feeling good on
the way home and for the next couple days, So I went back and told her how my neck
was also hurting so she stuck 20 or so in there too, I guess with the shoulder not hurting I started to feel my neck pains. She said come back next week and I went back and had the arm and neck done again even though my shoulder was feeling good
At the end of that treatment she said you are done no more treatments!! It has been
2 1/2 years and no pain from the shoulder at all and not once has it popped out of joint either. I would say try to find a real chinese doctor since they have been around
it and know what they are doing. It cost me $150.00 plus like $30.00 for some herbs
she had me take. That is basically like going to a specialist for three visits plus all the
other crap your GP is going to have you do. It is worth a shot if you are tired of pain
and taking drugs forever. You barely feel the needles they are smaller than a Hi E string on a guitar and don't go in farther than a half inch it looked like into my shoulder.
