Timing Gear Removal

Whats the best way to remove/reinstall the timing gears on the 300??

I'm putting together the shortblock of a 300 for a friend, and I have the block tore down. Ive tried using a puller on the Cam Timing gear, w/o any luck. Everything else in this motor is pretty well varnished together, like the distributor (had to remove it with force) The lifters (had to use Vice Grips) the Cam even has varnish covering most of it, with the exception of the Very tip of the lobe.

Should I just take it to the machine shop and get it pressed apart?? How about reinstallation?? This is my first time doin a 300, With the V8's ya dont have this issue.

I have the same problem on my inline 300. I dont have the money now but my plan of action is to just bring it in and have the shop do it. It just ended up taking me too much time to even try to pull it apart so my recomendation to you is just bring it in.

If you are rebuilding the engine the easiest was to do it is to pull the cam with the gear on it and have the machine shop press it off. If it's a fiber cam gear you can break all of the plastic off and just leave the steel hub on the cam. If you chisel on the outside of the metal hub it will expand and just fall off.

Yeah when I did mine (b/c the fiber gear had sheered off) I busted it apart and then chiseled and pryed on it till I got it off there, wasn't an easy job especially since it was in the truck. When I rebuilt it a few years later I went with a steel set.

When I changed my cam not long ago I pulled the old cam out and then used a 2 jaw puller to work it off slowly. If you can take it to a shop to press apart then it is easier on you! Putting one back on is actually easy. Most parts stores will rent you the tool to do it. The tool is basically a long bolt that threads into the end of the camshaft and a nut and bearing type washer (not sure what it is called) that you turn down to push it on. The same tool will work to install the crankshaft gear as long as it is the set with multiple threaded adapters.

Thanks, I ran into a issue today. I ran a flex hone thru the cylinders, and found a nasty ridge on one of the cylinders. Its not my motor, so its not my call, but IMO it needs to be bored .030 over..
