Smokin' the other thing that I've noticed with (my truck anyways) is on the warm up cycle with synthetic oil the engine has a sort of rolling sensation that is not there stone cold and then it's there for a few minutes and then it goes away when the engine fully warms up.
Using dino oil, the engine is glass smooth no matter what temperature and a lot quieter too.

NOBODY TOUCHES MY TRUCK BUT ME.
I think it's so weird how your truck is pretty much the opposite of most others, Dan. Do you have any ideas why it's like that?
We had a '99 Subaru Outback that had the piston slap because the skirts were too short. On cold days it sounded like the rods were going to go out the sides at any time. Subaru finally replaced the short block after much moaning. Our Mercedes diesel has some pretty loud nailing when cold but it goes away when warm. New injector nozzles helped it quite a bit. Keep us posted.
Yeah, piston slap has a sound all it's own. It's chunkier. Injector tap is a lot higher pitched. More like a loose rocker arm tap.
.
Joe I don't have a clue why the engine is more well behaved on Flintstone oil.
It is a lot louder under load when cold, but quieter at idle. Sounds like a jackhammer until the thermostat opens.
.
TchTchr you should hear my VW Rabbit on a cold morning. Sounds like a bucket of rocks and the pump/cam/crank timing is dead on with about 2500 miles on a fresh rebuild, new Mahle pistons and the thickest head gasket that was available. ( I wanted the extra clearance and the slight drop in compression. Still starts right up at 25 degrees F. ) NA12x injectors and new steel lines installed with the engine.
Now it's down because the pump sprang a leak and it is out for rebuilding at Seattle Injector. It's only 24 years old. Don't know why it gave out like that.

Chris I'm uploading a new file that I made. I positioned the camera in the right spot to really pick up on the tapping. I'll post a link as soon as it's done.
Lisa, since we all seem to agree this doesn't sound serious, you might just try switching back to the dino oil when it's time, or see how/if the sound changes when it starts to warm up outside.
Thanks Chris, Kwik, Pop. I made a few audio files this morning, but it was windy and i'm not sure you can hear much (my cell makes terrible audio, too). Anyway, I will try uploading them to see if you guys can hear anything. I DID, however, get good audio of turbo flutter, which may be helpful for future posts of people asking what the heck that noise is.
I won't be due for another oil change until springtime, so I'll switch back over to dino and see what happens.
Ok everyone, I hope you have a good set of speakers because these audio files suck! Maybe a trained ear like Kwik's will be able to hear the tick through this crap audio.
I did hear the tick, wasn't easy. Too much interference noise to call it, though.
If I HAD to guess, I would say it's the #8 injector.
.
You're welcome, Chris.
Kwik I'm at home and was finally able to download the video you posted. That is EXACTLY the sound of the "tick" my truck makes.
Kind of funny I turned the sound up on my laptop to as loud as it would go, and my boyfriend was upstairs. He shouted down to me and asked me why my truck was running.
Well then it's nothing to worry about. I've tried everything to eliminate that noise and the best that I can say is that it comes and goes for no apperant reason.
Glad to help.
