What would you do?

I just finished re-building the entire drive train, rear end and the front end of my '76 F250 4x4.The body is in need of some work .I will be putting a flat bed on it,so just the cab need's some fixin'.I found what I believe to be a '75 F350 on a guy's back fourty. The truck is just the cab and front end,in very good condition.I am thinking of buying the truck, would it be easier to swap the cab off it onto my truck? Or take everything out from under my truck and put under the F350?I'm kinda leaning toward the cab swap.

Logistically speaking, if you dont have the tools to move a cab off of a frame, I would say swap the drivetrain to the F350. One thing does not sound right to me however, F350s were not made in 4X4 form till '79, so you will be doing a 4x4 conversion. If it is a 4X4 (F250) and the frame is in better shape than yours?? Assuming you dont have any sentimental attachment, I would use and build the 75 with your parts from the 76. If the F350 is a 2WD, scrap the frame, use the cab and front fenders, and do something usefull with the title and VIN plates.

your cab must be in terrible shape to be seriously considering either of these options.

Was it hit by a spy satalite?

Cab swap is the way to go. I use two forklifts but it can be done with very little equipment. Since the bed is off you don't have to lift very high.

take that body and put it onto your frame. this swap is no big deal. i would do the front clip and all. your looking at 6 bolts, some minor fittings, couple plugs.....not much else. i wouldnt even bother taking the body apart at all. just cut the old one off and put the new one on.

My cab isn't completely shot by any mean's.Yesterday I welded in a couple floor pan patches, once I got right in there I found out that it is worse than I thought.I'm thinking the time it would take me to do all the body work,I should be able to swap cab's quicker.

I'm sure that the cab can be lifted with an engine hoist. It just needs to be done careful and safe.

The guy who has the truck, also has a front end loader. So I would probably pick it off right there. The only thing is,he will only sell the whole truck,I guess I would have the frame towed to a wrecker. The truck run's,it's got a 460 under the hood.

I used an engine hoist to lower and raise my '64 F350 cab on its chassis. I think my cardomain website has a pic of that.

That loader will do. Has enough force to rip it right off the chassis. You can easily send the rest to a wrecker or sell it privately. The 460 is an engine in demand and the F350 short or long wheelbase is also demand. The axle alone can get you a good deal to an off-roader.

That's the other reason I'm thinking of buying the truck.I'm sur I could make my money back just on parting it out.

I have swapped numerous cabs. They cab be moved around quite easily with you and 3 of your buddies. If you dont have buddies available, you can roll the windows down and use a heavy yellow ratchet strap. Loop it though the windows, and over the top of the cab and hook the ends together. slide it up towards the vent windows and ratchet it tight. Now you can hook on with an engine lift or cherry picker and pick it up. I have done this numerous times. I have done it with both a stripped down cab without doors and windows, steering column, etc. I have also done it with a complete cab, but you have to be a little more careful because of the extra weight. If your happy with your frame and drivetrain, this is the route I would go.

Excellent point, whitty. I used a soft tow strap to lift the cab in the same position. I had no doors on, so the strap whent through the door openings and along the roof. I was worried that this process might damage the cab oby warping it a bit. It didn't.

I picked up a cab from a salvage yard to resell. The yard didn't care. To pick it up to put on my truck. He crashed his forklift through the cab rear window and raised it with the forks. The forks damaged the roof and warpped the cab a bit. The doors don't close properly. Total loss.
