does anyone know of any type of attatchment that goes on your wheels that work as a winch for self recovery of a stuck vehicle?

people have talked about this. You can search and find the thread. but the consensus is it wont work right. You would have to be fully locked for starters, but theres other issues.

without reading the link I dont see how or why you would want this?

Here is what I picture in my head but I might be way off. Basically a rim mounted to the wheel...piece of cable attached to the rim....when the tire spins it takes up the slack in the cable...thus pulling out the truck? LAME-ola!

Problems that I forsee. How many people want some type BS rig attached to their rim. A non locked front axle wont ever try to spin the tire under load. How many people have a locked front? Ones who do will likely break ujoints axles etc if they are stuck bad. If on the rear of the truck and break a axle (non-FF) guess what...Cant go home.

There is too much wrong with doing it this way.

The military does it apparently. Still seems like a bad idea though.

Another thing to keep in mind is how often you get stuck while you're still able to see your wheels. I don't know about you guys, but when I'm stuck, my wheels/tires are usually buried. I'll stick with my winch.

Not a terrile idea, but nothing I would do, and it would cause more trouble than it'd be worth, but it could come in handy in a few occasions.... but like I said, not for me.

the military doesnt even use those winches anymore, heck i dont even think we have them maybe one or 2. but then again thats why we have the hemitts. nothink like 8 wheel drive and a 60k winch to get ya unstuck.

Well, it is an idea that keeps getting retreaded from the farmer and a rope to the H1 and its wheel winch. Poor idea all around because

> but when I'm stuck, my wheels/tires are usually buried

and the hub/lugnuts are usually not the strongest pulling point, a good frame attachment is.

A pulley block and a come along. More pulley blocks and you increase the power of the come along to get you unstuck from anything!! Of course it takes longer but it
is hella cheap!! If you had dual wheels you could run a rope/cable around a tree and
to the left and to the right wheels and back up but, you need a tree or a heavier
vehicle to attach to.
