Being the poor teenager i am i am wondering if you can you an carb spacer or adapter to put a 4bbl carb on the stock 2bbl 400 manifold also as a not is 210* to hot for a running temp
I am running a 4V-2V adaptor plate under my Edelbrock 4106 righ now.
I have an aluminum manifold to run with my engine when it gets rebuilt. I bought the 4106 to replace the cracked and leaking stock 2V. I knew I was going to need the 4V and couldn't see laying out the $$ for a replacement 2V. I found a Mr Gasket adaptor plate (cheap)that would "work" with heavy modifications. The Mr Gasket plate is sooo adptable and full of holes to the point of being useless. Without carefull attention to details they will leak badly. Edelbrock does not recommend using adaptor plates for some of the same reasons. I have a 2" spacer to go under the carb for use with my Edelbrock manifold later.
I agree that the adapter plates are usually not a good idea. Possibly using a Holley 2V carb would be a better idea. 210 degrees is pretty hot for my taste. If it were my engine I would not be able to drive it due to vapor lock. Are you sure of the temp?
I have run into the same prob in the past but for the price of a Holley 2V, you can get a 4V intake and 4V holleys are much more plentifull and cheaper.
I have seen dyno tests where an otherwise completely stock 2v 351C had a 4bbl carb adaptor and 600 holley bolted on, and I think it actually LOST power. Must screw up the vacuum signal or something.
It does screw up the vacuum. The engine wont create enough vacuum to use the 4bbl on the 2 bbl properly, especially if you have a good cam in the engine.
When you add the adaptor plate you have to fabricate a divider plate to maintain the dual plane characteristics or it will mess with the vac signal bad. I fabbed one up with mine and it does a good job. I cant say that I have run it on a dyno but when the secondaries cut in you definitely feel it. I won't be using the plate much longer. I will be pulling the engine soon :-)
Whenever you add a carb spacer to a dual plane manifold get a 4-hole unit or fabricate a divider plate. Sometimes a small notch cut near the secondaries will help the top end (check out an OEM 460 manifold). The stock 460 manifold will perform as good or better than any aftermarket unit. The only thing you save is weight.
