Hello everyone, thank you in advance for any time spent helping me. I have done some extensive forum searches for info on this particular axle with no sucess. I have a 72 f250 crewcab with some mods. It looks like someone may have put a different axle in the rear. It has a 70 (I think) cast into the top of the housing and the numbers 030788 cast into the back of the housing. There are no numbers stamped into the axle tubes but the tag reads 603179-4 DO1A-AD with a 4:10 ratio. The tubes look to be 3.5 inches with drum brakes, it is a dually. It also has a 10 bolt cover. I haven't pulled the cover off yet. I have looked every where for these bom numbers with no luck. I'm just trying to find out what I have for future reference. Anyone?
Not sure / an expert on this or any subject; just wanted to welcome you aboard. Post your vin data and it might help with the overall decoding; or better yet look (Some great FTE folks have developed a reference site) at the top of this page under Article/ Specs; scroll down to vin decode and it might help ya.
Again welcome aboard.
Sounds like a Dana 70. The closest BOM I can find is a 603180 and that's a 1970 Dana 70. The D01A would say it was originally designed for a 1970 vehicle. Here's a picture of my 1969 Dana 70. Just ignore the swaybar as that is off a later truck.
Thank you all for the welcome and info, had no idea the DO1A made it a '70. Looks just like the picture. Would still love to find the exact vehicle this thing came out of just can't trace that BOM number. This was my first post on any forum, I appreciate not being burned at the stake like I've seen in other forums.
Likely from an F350 DRW. Easy and common swap. Does your truck have the dually hubs and wheels in front too? If not, I believe the DRW stuff will work on your spindles if you can find it. That way all your wheels will be the same. You could even use the DRW front hub/rotors/calipers from a '73 and newer truck and upgrade to disc brakes.
The front axle on the this truck is actually off of a '77 f250 and is an open knuckle dana 44 hd. Some one converted this to a 4x4 before I bought it. I have recently put a 460 in it with some performance improvements. It's been a bit of a challenge tracking down what this truck really is. The vin # indicates it was originally a 2 wd with a 300 six cyl. Not sure what the emissions people are going to call it. Thanks to everyone for the input.
