My son's Ranger has the dreaded check engine light. I took it to Autozone and did a scan on it. The result was "low voltage from throttle position sensor". I bought the TPS, and when I refered to the Haynes Manual it said that the TPS should not be replaced by a "home mechanic" because it needed special calibration after installation.
Is this accurate? I recall replacing the TPS in mid 80's Buicks (when I was a tech) and it was pretty much plug and play. Of course, my memmory could be failing me.
Basically 1. it has locktite on the bolts (real nasty job to get off). Two they want to make sure you install the positioner correctly. I did it on my 2.5L with no problems.
