MY first F-250 SD

About two weeks ago, I bought my first F-250 SD. I'd owed a 1994 F-150 since '96, and it's about to give up the ghost, so I took the plunge. What I've got is kind of a mystery to me, since it is a used vehicle, though I have done a good bit of research on the model itself.

Here's what I know:

2005 F-250 SD FX4, short bed, crew cab, 5.4l 3V, auto, with 62k. The previous owner had done one mod that I can confirm; dual exhaust from the cats back into what looks like 2 Flowmasters, but, I can't tell for sure. It does sound wicked as hell, though. I haven't driven it enough to get a firm grasp on the gas mileage, but, it doesn't seem to be any worse than my 1993 E-150 conversin van with a 5.0, and it's a whole lot more fun to drive.

I've put about 650 miles on it and haven't noticed any decrease in the amount of oil in the crankcase or any smoke coming from the tailpipe. I've been checking for fluid leaks and all that, none. Only real problem I've found, and I should have noticed this before I bought it, she needs tires...

One thing I am having trouble locating is the axle ratio. From what I've read there were either 3.73 or 4.10 available in this truck. On my older Ford's, you could look at the differential cover tag and get the ratio. This new one does not show 373 or 410, but 433. Was the 4.33 ratio an option in these trucks?

When I can get home from work in the daylight, I'll try to get some pics on the digtal camera and post them.

Send an email to: crcfmc@ford.com with your name, address, VIN#, year, make and model and ask for a vehicle build sheet.

Ford will mail you a letter with the exact options, axle ratio, etc that your truck has.

The axle ratio might be on the driver's door sticker too, I'm not sure. I know that its located somewhere on your truck and the question has been asked here before.

And that's good if the previous owner didn't swap the rear-end. With the split exhaust, it sounds like he might have been trying to beef it up a bit, and maybe he did put a 4.30 rear end in it. I have a 4.30 sitting on my garage floor just waiting for me to get off my duff and put in my 5.4L.

You can also bring your vin to the dealer, parts counter and they will print out all the info about your truck. Mine was 4 pages long.

My 99.5 F-250 7.3 PSD has 3.73's. I was told that the sigle rear wheel models have 3.73 stock and the 4.10's only come stock in the dual rear wheel models.

Diesels yes but he has a gasser. Gasser 5.4L can have either 3.73 or 4.10. V10 can have 4.10 or 4.30 in the 05-08 trucks.

Look on the drivers door jamb. There will be a axel code. You can go to the super duty tech folder at the top of this forums page and match it up. It will tell you the ratio and type of gear (open or limited slip)

Or you can crawl under there and look at the tag on the axel tube. After 5 years and 90K miles my tag is still there it syas 3.73LS.

Thanks much for the tip. My code is 4N which = 4.10LS. Kewl. Now it's time to look at a cold air kit to match my exhaust...
