First off this forum is great, I've been on here for several years mostly reading. This time I need a little help. We just got back from a trip to colorado, from Oklahoma city. I have a 2002 F250, 4WD, the mods I have done are 6637 air filter, 4 inch turbo back exhaust, wicked wheel, 6.0 tans cooler and gauges. We pull a 30 foot 5er, about 10,000 pounds. Every time I pull the camper I get a check engine light, most times it happens pulling a hill or if we have a head wind, it will stay on 15 to 30 minutes and go off until we pull the next hill. Never comes on any other time, I've had the truck 3 years and the only time it comes on is pulling the trailer.
2nd problem, we overheating on this trip. Happened after driving all day, into Peublo, CO pulling up a couple of pretty good grades, went from normal to hot in just about a half mile. Got out of the throttle and it came back down. We were stopping for the night, thought it was the fan clutch and there was an ORielly's close so I put a fan clutch on. Left the next morning drove for 75 miles, and had to pull the pass at Raton, NM. Well didn't make it, it overheated and check gauges light came on. Pulled over and shut if off for about 15 minutes, started it back up, had about a mile and half of the pass left, made it over and drove the the rest of the into
Amerillo, TX. No problems. Outside temp both days was 105 degrees.
I'm thinking the CEL may be overboost? Overheating, the thermostat is a year old. I have 216,000 miles on the truck. I did a flush and coolant change about 2 years ago.
Sorry so long, but wanted to get all the details in.
You have a wicked wheel and gauges, do you have a chip? If you suspect an overboost code, how much boost were you running? What did the EGT's look like?
For the overheating, did you use a long or short stem thermostat when you changed it? Are there any obstructions up front or is the radiator clogged with dirt or insects? Can you hear the fan clutch locking up?
EGT's were about 1100 to 1200 on the uphill pull. I don't see any obstructions on the radiator, the only change from last year to this year is the 6.0 trans cooler and the wicked wheel. We made this same trip last year, no overheating, but did get the check engine light, and turbo surge. So I put in the wicked wheel, and trans cooler for this years trip.
Read the code. If it's an ICP code, then it's likely a weak HPOP. P1211 is a fairly common code with many chips/ tuners. If you're getting that now without a chip, then it looks like you've got something else to add to your to do list.
Got the codes yesterday, it did have the P1211 ICP code, and a P0470 exhaust back pressure sensor circuit malfunction code.
Could it be fuel pressure or the IPR causing the P1211 code, rather than a weak HPOP?
When it throws the CEL I can tell no difference in how the truck runs, really no performance issues at all, it just throws the CEL under hard pull.
