I am going to replace the speedo gear on my transfer case. I believe I have a E4OD tranny. I have a 2000 f150 4x4. the od light flashes when in cruise control mold traveling around 70. I have read other posts and alot of the problems seem to be this VSS gear. I need help on how to determine the right gear and how to remove it as well. Do I have to remove the tail shaft or is the gear atttached to the speedo switch? any help will be appreciated.
I am pretty certain your 2000 would not have a speedo gear. That it takes input of the ring gear sensor in the rear. Clutch dusk from the LS if you have one of those, could have dirtied up the teeth to cause false readings. To fix that would be to pull the rear end cover, wipe out the buildup and add fresh rear lube.
If you do have one, it is in the tail cone and very easy to remove. A 10 or 12mm bolt (don't recall which) is at the base holding it in like the old distributor clamps. Remove the bolt and the unit pulls out. It has an o-ring on it so could be hard to pull. The gear itself is held on by a spring clip. pop that off with a screwdriver or pointed awl and that slips off. do a search of the site and you will find several links about gears available. Oh, and if you wish to take to the bench, be sure to pop the connector off while still installed. Easier to do that way. And finally, be sure to put a little lube on the oring before re installing.

Shooting from the hip here. I believe the dealer can pull tranny codes, But if you think the VSS is suspect - pull and clean the sensor at the top of the diff. Easy to do only one bolt and no oil to drain. (much easier if you drop the spare tire)
