when I made this post, I never expected so much feedback and useful info. Thanks for sharing the knowledge and experience. I will use your suggestions to build a system. I do like the idea of keeping the factory head unit. Everything I've found aftermarket is way small for the factory hole. I think Pioneer offered a replacement that was bigger and filled those holes nicely. I haven't been able to find anything like that recently. I am worried how an adapter plate will look in my EX.
Thanks again. I will let you know what I install and hopefully post some photos.
thanks for the compliments on my X's system..it was put together on the cheap...alot more labor for me than money..can you post pics of the tweets in the sail panels? mainly the angle for best imaging..i'll be moving the infinity 5x7's i have in the doors to the 3rd row seats and going componants for the fronts....a 4 gauge A pillar is going in on the drivers side and i've been looking for a solution..also any recommendations for those front door speakers?
You are welcome and its a great pleasure to be of some help around here....LOL!!
I cannot post pics yet becuase i chose to not post and just read instead(being bashful i guess)...not any more i am trying to get my post count up so i can grow up and have a sig and post pics and .and..and...LOL!! Just shoot me an email at gp05blackmax@yahoo.com and i will be more than happy to show you pics.....infact i will tell you this right now, they have to be glassed in order to get the proper angle and so forth, if you dont have the time nor expertise(which its really easy) then i might entertain the idea of you sending them to me and i will do the work for you and send them back..howz that sound?...anyways drop me an email.
Your doors???!!!!..well i know that you can fab some MDF trim rings/baffles to retro fit a 6.5 in there but i took the other route and just rebuilt my doors.....i had too many drivers to not build my door panels out......i will also send you pics of that and help out any way i can.
Looks really good 4wdbeast! Is the Excursion quite now with all the sound deadner? How does sound system sound?
Really quiet...as quiet you will ever get a diesel :-) But seriously, impressively different from before. Sounds great. Tested it eith the IASCA CD and I like the sound. Not the rap thumb but great for listiening to anything from classic to 70s rock. Since I moved the soundstage up (basically balancing the tweeters with the door and floor speakers, there is much less listening fatigue.
If I had to do it again, I would never put the tweeters in the sail panels. It didn't do any good...
Good luck, I keep updating my pics as I get a chance to get something done.

Bart
How do you think tweeters would do in the rear doors, sort of like the 08 Super Duties. Heres pic.
Also, would I be able to put tweeters on the Excursions C pillar in the 3rd row?

I wouldn't put separate tweeters in the back. I upgraded the rear speakers with a quality combination and powered them from the head unit's rear channels. I use the rear for mild fill. Too much and the whole thing loses definition, impossible to create a front stage, and there is interference and muddy sound. Just my penny.

Bart can you go into more detail about your sound deadening mod? I have a bunch of b-quiet Ultimate coming and wouldn't mind having a few tips if you got any.

1. It's time consuming :-)
2. Have a plan.
3. Remove seats and carpet.
4. While theoretically you should do the B and C pillars, in reality this is difficult to do and probably not worth the effort.
5. If you have the energy, do the roof. Seeing some friends who did the roof, doesn't make that much more difference. Certainly not enough for me to rip the headliner off.
6. Doors made a major difference. Tedious work, so I did one at the time. Just hearing the firm "thud" when closing the door makes it worth it. Check out my pics.
7. Plan your system, run the wiring before putting carpet etc... in. Run the speaker, signal, and power wires away from each other. Cross perpendicularly if necessary. I used aluminum tape over EACH wire individually and have ZERO noise even at high volumes playing classical music with silences.
8. I think my pictures show pretty much the steps I went through, with some of the mistakes and pitfalls.
Does the factory system have a remote mounted amp to power the six speakers or is the power coming from the head unit?
.
Chris,
I have an alpine headunit. I respliced the rear speakers on each side in series (have 2 Ohm infinity kappas) and powered by the Alpine head unit's rear speaker output.
The front speakers are via the rca output to 4 channel amp, the subwoofer output to well...you ought to know this :-)
Hey 4wdBeast I forgot to ask, you used Second Skin Insulation right? There was a guy in the Super Duty Forum awhile back that put Second Skin in his truck and he had this website that had performed a comparo of different insulation brands and the Second Skin ended to be the winner of the comparo.
