I have a 92 bronco and it has the usual cancer around the rear fenders. I am looking to cut out the cancer and go back to the stock fender or install flares to cover the bigger wheel well. Have any of you guys done this and if so, how involved is it? Any pics of how this looks when done would be great.
On my old Bronco I put Bushwacker flares on to cover the rust. it worked for awhile, then I had to get cut out flares when the rust got beyond them. On my new Bronco, I got the cut out flares right away to clear tires. They are eazy to install (sawsall) and get rid of all the rust. You can check my gallery for pics.
One of the best ways to remove any cancer spots is with a Pneumatic air gringer/rotary tool. And take your time. I used bondo for a spot, and mixed a little too much catalyst into the formula and got horrible results. It looked like a two year old used a crayon and silly putty to fix my door.
I do a lot of work with boats, and we use a compound called Marinetex. It does wonders with steel or fiberglass, and will not shrink, rattle out, or crack with temp changes. Very easy to paint and sand. But that is IMO. Everyone else may have a different way about doing things. But one thing will be common. Take your time, and sand, sand, sand.
Thanks guys for the replys. Ive never been into the big massive fender flares, so is there something out there thats kind of a pre runner style, has the opening of the big flare but without the fender sticking out from the body 4 or so inches.
Yea the flares that stick out dont look good unless you have tires that fill it. They make some rubber flares that can go on any opening. You can custom cut and install. They only stick out about 2" or less. I think you can get them at JC Whitney.
