temp sensor replacement question

I'm getting ready to replace the coolant temp sensor in my '79 351M. Do I need to drain some coolant from the system before I unplug the old sensor, or is it high enough not to leak out? Thanks,
Robb

Yes, drain a couple gallons out so you don't make a mess.

But if your Really Good .. You can loosen the old one up to about the last thread and have the New one all dabbed up with pipe dope in one hand . and then remove the old one and stick the new one in with minamal leakage... With the Radiator cap on tight it don't run out real fast cuz of the vacume.Glug Glug Glug Effect.....

some times, depending on the location the coolant wont run out or runs out slow if you leave the radiator cap on tight.

Well I replaced the sensor Saturday, and let me tell ya-- DRAIN THE RADIATOR (its going to happen one way or another ) I had the new sensor doped up, ready to go (I even took off the alternator so I'd have plenty of room to work), and turned the old one to the last thread, and BOOM! Green fluid shooting out like the Johnstown flood, all the while I'm trying frantically to put the new one in, which causes the fluid to just squirt every-which-way. I got it back in okay, but I did end up draining about 2 gallons of fluid, just not the way I had expected.
BTW, the new sensor works great! I finally have some idea of the temp of my engine.
