Rotating retainers

Does the M blocks heads need to have these? I have seen some with and some without.

So whats the deal?

Rotating retainers

Jopey, the rotating-style retainers are used in order to allow the valves to rotate on the seats, thus keeping them clear of carbon buildups (exhaust) that would otherwise eat into the valve/valve seat. Same theory for the intake valve (minus carbon), however, I personally have never seen rotational retainers on a 351m/400 for the intakes, only exhaust. Keep in mind they are not necessary, but, they do add longevity to the valves and valve seats. (ie, more miles) Hope this helps. - Don, New York
