I have an 02 F150, 9.75 rear! 10 months ago and about 10,000miles installed 4.56s and after about 7-8 months developed a leak coming from the yoke, where the shaft enters the hogg head. Its a slow drop, and is prob leaking mainly while Im driving...I can see oil splattered all over the under side of the truck. I have pulled the yoke out, replaced it, replaced the seal again, pulled the bearing out and it looked fine. Put it all back together and still the same thing! Im no expert on differentials, only basic nohow and knowledge...What could be causing this? Thanks!
Yah, I apologize, I failed to mention that I also did that when I took it all back apart. Pulled the drain plug, blew air into it. Pulled the hose, air was flowing fine. Although wanted to try to unscrew that little piece out that the air hose conects to...just to try to clean it good no matter even if the air was flowing, but couldnt not get it off the axle. It was seized up, and I didnt try "Too" hard to take it out yet. Blowing air through it, it appears to sound and feel, like air is flowing fine. But that is also compressed air! Thanks guys, any other suggestions...or could this still be the prob?
Not too much else that could cause it. Play in the pinion ? in out, up down. Is the seal surface on the yoke worn ? Did you try the seal in the yoke before you put the seal in. Did you prelube the seal before installing it ?
If all this is good, the next time you take it for a long run and it's good and hot remove the filler plug slowly and listen for a vacuum sound. If you hear anything it's not getting a good enough vent.
Mark A...Thanks for the great Info! It will be going up on the lift again soon to figure this out. I will try these suggestions...as I stated, Im not an expert by any means with differentials, only basic stuff. I didnt think it could be anything else...but I will def play around w the pinion again and maybe put another seal back in it! Thanks again!
