Hey i need some help from the experts.I have a 78 f150 4x4,iam rebuilding.I was driving about 45 to 55 mph,and i hit a small hump in the road well the driver side front tire started jumping (up and down)all over the place - it scared the hell out of me because i total lost control of the truck i slow down had to come to a complete stop before the wheel would stop jumping up and down. Can anyone help me out on this one?
Also alittle info,i got brand new 4inch suspension lift on the truck (new coil springs-shocks and 3inch block in rear),new hubs new front chunk (dana 44) new wheel barrens,i running new mickey thomas bawa claws (33x12.50x15)
Im not sure if its the same problem but.... This happened to me driving one of our company trucks (2003 Dodge 3500 4x4 crewcab long box). I was driving down the highway around 110KMH and hit a bump and it started to hop around and didnt stop till I slowed right down. I got out checked the truck over and everything seemed good so I started driving again. I talked to a mechanic and he said I needed a new steering stabilzer. He also said that Dodges are known to have this problem, especially with a warn stablizer. So possible thats your problem? Did you put a new one on with your new suspension?
I have a new steer damper on the front, and new wheel bearing along with new hubs.I have replaced everything on the front of the truck (suspension wise) beside tie rods-and ball joints.I know nothing about ball joints if they or bad or not,i dont know how to tell-i can grab tie rod and move it up and down alittle play is that mean they or bad or worn out-also when i bought the truck it doesnt have a sway bar either on the front..
jack axle up grab top and bottom of tire, pull and push top and bottom, if it moves replace.. then grap sides and move back and forth that will check tire rods drag link and such.. should move to much
Withe the truck off,and all 4 tires on the ground-Have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth a 1/4 turn. While they are doing this, you look under the the truck from the front at all of the moving steering/suspension parts.
You should see the problem right away.VERY common causes to your problem on 78/79 F-150/Broncos are:worn or missing trac-bar bushings,or a worn out trac bar bracket.
One other idea. I had a '99 F250 that I replaced the rear shocks with oil filled shocks. First time I ever used oil filled shocks, always used gas. So after I replaced the shocks when I would hit a bump the rear end would bounce for the next couple blocks. I was discussing this with my father one night, and his buddy chimned in and said that if oil filled shocks sit on the shelf long enough they need to be worked before installation. I never knew or heard of this before. So the next night I went and pulled the shocks off and there was no resistance there at all. So I put one end in the vise and moved the shock in and out completely for about 2 mins each. After the 2 mins they worked fine. Not sure what was the exact cause, but something to check into.

Yes, that means that the tie rod is shot. If you can move it at all it means that it is worn. Replace it immediately before it comes apart and you loose all steering control. My brother had an old 79 F150 4x4 that gave me the death wobble one day. We replaced the tie rod and had it aligned, problem fixed.
Check all tie rod and steering linkages for wear, R & R as necessary.
Check all ball joint for wear and play, R & R as necessary.
Check stabilizer shock, replace if necessary.
Check the track arm bolts and bushing for wear.
Most times the bolt and nut will need to retighten for the track arm.
The only thing I see jumping are the Alabama Jumpers.

Good luck!
THat is good to do, but it was pointed out to me once to actually touch the joints in question and feel for slop as well as look for it.
