ok, i know my engine needs a lot of work and all that good stuff, but... every time i hit the gas real quick and get off it, it stalls out. what could be doing this? it gets really aggrivating to have to start the truck up every time i tap the gas. even when i get off the gas after normal driving when the engine idles down, it sounds like it wants to stall out on me. i was going to mess with my timing today but my distributer is stuck right now. any suggestions to help me out?
I had the same problems from time to time. You didn't mention if you have trottlebody inj.you could chase that for ever. sometimes a bad EGR valve in back of manifold is the reason, and I also found on a302 that the heat passage in the intake that crosses over from one side to other carboned up and pluged.
My TBI on my 84T-Bird had every sensor and componet replaced snd still to the day it was junked w/out finding the major cause.
I have also have had a Dist. with dual vacuum hookup be a problem with that I changed that vacuum advance to a single one.
I have found if you had a carb that sat for a while that the acceletor pump diapham dried out and was sucking air instead of pumping gas into the engine . You could also look for a bad vacuum hose or intake gasket or carb gasket
I hope that some of these things give you an idea whats wrong.
Good luck, jim
thanks, you have a lot of good suggestions for me to check out but i just realized, i didn't post what engine i had. it is a 79 351m. i think my biggest problem right now is that i just ripped off all my egr crap and i just haven't had the money or time to get non-egr parts for my engine.
Another possibility, at least for idling down too far after normal driving is the throttle position solenoid. I'm not sure if that's the correct technical name or not. It's electrically actuated and is directly in front of the throttle linkage. When the engine is running, or the ignition is on, the shaft from the solenoid extends to prevent the throttle from idling down too far. When the ignition is shut off, the shaft retracts to allow the throttle to close fully.
If I'm inccorect on the exact operation, I'm sure someone else here can clear up any errors.
well last nite, i tried to mess with my air/fuel mixture and i think i really messed it up now when the truck first starts off it is really rough and hesitates bad, i don't know if it is flooding or stuggling for fuel/air whatever. but when it is going it has pretty good pickup, as long as i push the pedal, but what fun is it to gently push it down?! god i give up on this truck. hopefully today i will be able to mess with the timing, so i wll keep you updated, keep the help coming. i am going to have to find that throttle thing.
Sometimes the "dashpot" on the front drivers side of the carb can go bad too, it's purpose in life is to limit how fast the throttle plates slam shut. When it's broken/missing and you let off the gas quickly the throttle plates can slam shut and can cause the engine to die.
