Valve spring ?'s

I am swapping heads and adding a cam this summer. I have already ordered a cam/lifter set and I am planning on doing a simple rebuild with an extra set of heads I have. Motor is an 85' 460 with 127k miles, and I have a set of 80k mile heads from a 77 lincoln. I am going to have the lincoln heads cleaned, do some port work, replace the seals and lap the valves. I am trying to get at least 5 years from this motor before I do a CTD swap and right now the valve seals are shot and I have a dead lifter.

Question #1-When I remove the valves from the heads, do they have to go back in the positions I removed them from?

Question #2-Would there be any benefit to using one set of valve springs over the other, lincoln vs. ford?

#1 yes, if you are not going to get them ground, they have to go back in where they came from.
#2 I'd just get a new set of springs for the cam you are going to use. Old single springs probably won't work very good. New springs are cheep.

Ok, I'll look into getting some springs. Should I go with OEM springs or something aftermarket. Will I also have to replace the head bolts when I swap heads? I'd like to have all my parts together to minimize down time.

The head bolts won't need replaced. I'd get a set of springs that match the cams requirements. Springs should always be matched closely to the mfgr's specs.

I got the cam from summit and they did have a recommended set of springs, but they were a bit pricey. Shouldn't be a problem to find a different brand with the same specs though right?

What's the point in buying a good cam then not get it's full potential by using inferior valve springs? Always buy the cam kit which includes cam, lifters and springs. They are designed to work properly together.

I looked for a kit that included the springs but didn't see one. It just had a list of recommended parts that happened to include some springs. If I can't find other springs I can at least order the recommeded springs through work since they were name brand. Then I can use my discount.

This is also my first cam swap, so I'm learning here. I have swapped heads before, but never a cam. After doing some searching in here, it also looks like I need to find an older(1970) timing set to throw on as well.

I am going to order the recommended valve springs and I also found an adjustable timing gear set as well. I have one more question though. Are the valves adjustable, or will I just torque them down and be done with it?

What are the cam specs? Your heads are non adjustable from the factory.

You really don't need an adjustable valvetrain with that cam. The factory rockers should be fine. Just torque them down.

Thanks, I was hoping I wouldn't have to adjust them. I just wanted a cam that was a little better than stock.

I would still check the lifter preload though.

The cam is just a little better than stock. You still need to check everything when assembling. A little extra time now will prevent a bad headache later.
