400 crank swap

My 351M needs a rebuild, and I want to turn it into a full 400 cubes. Where can I get a 400 crank? Don't really want to buy one from a yard. Are there any 400 conversion kits available for the 351m? If so, where could I find them, and which is the best? Thanks much!

You can get a 400 crank from about anywhere. JC Whitney even sells them. After that just get a rebuild kit for a 400 with pistons and have fun. I've heard that the timing marks on the balancer are different, I don't know about that, mine runs just fine.

I have heard some rumored negatives on their quality of late but nothing definite; but PAW (Performance Automotive Warehouse) sells lowerend kits with various levels of options. If nothing else, call your local truck salvage yard and ask for their core buyer's phone number. I picked up a restorable core for my engine for $50.

Believe it or not I found mine on eBay. It was already turned and all I did was have the machine shop give it a final polish. I paid $65 for it.

400 crank swap

Hello fellow Ford people! I was just given a 400 engine that's been setting underneath trees for quite a while. Y'all think it's worth rebulding? I wish to have another engine ready to drop in with the good stuff installed The intake is gone but the heads were laying right beside.

As long as the bores are ok- any engine gift is a good one!

I was given another block and pistons with my 79, it's a 400. the crank was ground .010 15k miles ago. Either I rebuild the block and it sits, or I sell the parts. so here's what I have: Pistons .030 over never been out of box, crank ground .010 under, lifters, and a whole block. One of the pistons in the block has a hole in it. A great way to either build a 400 or use the cheap parts to redo yours..

See if you can get it apart 1st. If the pistons are seized from rust, you won't be able to turn the crank. Measure the bores to see if it was ever rebuilt.

400 crank swap

just curious why you wouldn't want one from a boneyard?

i got a couple from a local place. i watched & helped them take the cranks out of the motors they were in. took a look at the bearings, all looked ok. one was std. ($35), the other was .010/.010 ($30)

it seems to me that the "safest" place for a crank to be is in the block! plus you get an idea of the history that way - they weren't sitting around rusting or getting dropped or gouged, they came out of engines that appeared to have no problems with the bottom end.

i just wish i'd known back then to look at the foundry codes on the blocks - i might have just bought the whole shortblocks instead!

is there a problem with junkyard cranks that i don't know about?
