400 Build ups

Repeat post from the Cleveland board.

"I'm always interested in 400 swaps into shock towered vehicles like the Torino and AU Falcons. Keep exhaust fit and motor mount issues in mind since these engines were never installed by Ford. I'm building 2, but I just hate to give away all my secrets.

I recommend 4 different combos from daily driver to the insane, but no combo is set in stone.

1. 400 380HP.
http://home.earthlink.net/~tcrocker/400.html
A good general build for the 400. I think 90% of the drivers would be very happy with it.

2. Start with my stroker formula for the short block.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/DCForumID12/1068.html
Build the top end similar to the 1st combo. Head gaskets are available thick enough to get compression under 9.5:1 easily. About 400-425HP & 500+ ft lbs torque should be no problem with headers,(based on combo #1 dyno test).

3. Same stroker shortblock, but with 4V OPEN chamber heads. Compression will be similar to #2, but will hit 13:1 with quench style heads (using flat tops). A 400 intake and headers can be used to start, with an upgrade to 351C 4V intake, adapter plates and custom 4V headers if budget allows. Probably 450-475HP with similar torque to combo #2.

4. OK, now we're getting into ShaZam territory.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/DCForumID12/142.html
Time to get away from factory parts and spend some $$.
Custom stroker cranks are expensive.
Proline is coming out with some more affordable ones for the 351W up to 4.5" stroke and I believe they can be modified to fit the 400. That's gonna make a 460+" stroker. Aftermarket rods, custom forged pistons, block strengthening, etc, must be done. See ShaZam's 800HP, list of goodies.
Who'll build the first to own a 1000HP smog motor?

I hope everyone starts slow. #3 is like handing a 44 Magnum to a child. #4 is an un-Godly amount of power that has no place on the street. You can kill yourself and many others just fine with #3. Drive safe."

I read the article that you have as build #1.....

It's hard to believe that he got so much power out of a 268 cam.....

Seemed real easy for him to get the comp ratio he was after 9.4 to 1....

I'm gonna build one

If you're using MSIE 6.0 then the jpegs automatically resize to fit in the browser window. All you have to do is click on the little box that appears in the lower right hand corner of the pic after a few seconds and it will resize to the original resolution.

Nice engine! That's what I need, about 3000hp, 70K or so pounds of tractive effort, and external combustion, all in a Santa- Fe type arrangement. By the way, I also own a model train custom building business, specializing in paint, and layout construction.

Oh yeah, the 400 is pretty nice too.
