What is the easiest way to remove the old bushings (these are original bushing if that matters) from leaf springs. The springs are already removed from the truck. I have a new set coming this week but want to reomve the old ones before it gets here. Need to get the rear end back under the truck as soon as possible. Thanks
The way I always do them is with a press and a set of torches. Push the center out first, then the rubber, then burn the sleeve out right at the parting line. Then press the new one in.
I use a muffler cutter tool on the air hammer. Start where the end of the spring wraps around and start hammering. I pick 2 or 3 places around the bushing to hammer at. Sometimes you cut through the steel and rubber, sometimes the bushing moves...but all in all it took less than 5 minutes per bushing to get them out.
I used a torch. Once you get them burning good just let em go. when they go out knock out the crud and clean them up. I beat on mine and used my air chisel with no luck. Lay them on their side and torch the bottom then turn them over and torch the other side. Remember fire burns up.
I usually burn them out. If it has a metal bushing around the eye, I would cut it with a sawall (or air chisel) in three places and then peel the bushing out with the air chisel. I have ball joint presses and a 12 ton press, but, this way works best for me.
