On my 7.3 motor i noticed a small spot of oil everytime i shut the truck off. I wasn't seeing any drop in my oil level so i was told not to worry about it. Now i am seeing even bigger puddles, there is oil pooling up on my intake manifold, and my oil level keeps dropping. Could it be a leak in the high pressure oil pump? The truck still seems to be running fine i just can't figure out what this leak could be.
It sometimes takes a bit of effort to find a top side leak. With a flashlight and inspection mirror you can see all around the HPOP. There is a plug on the backside that can leak. Run a finger under the high pressure oil lines to the heads to check those. Parallel to the HPO lines on the heads is a series of threaded in galley plugs, any one of those (8) could be leaking. Also check the mount for the turbo and the turbo pedestal mount at the block and the EBPV rod where it exits the pedestal.
A little patients and a lot of looking and you'll find it.
You should also check your CAC tubes. They will create a small leak. Grap the rubbers tubes with you hands. If it feels oily. That could be your problem.
Man, I just went through this! Mine turned out to be a cracked HPOP but yours is most likely the HPOP seals as everyone here will tell you. I hope you have more patients than me with this.
If it is the seals that are leaking, are these the same things as the o-rings or is there other seals involved in this?
Yes, I'm sorry. I meant to say o-rings. They aren't very expensive from Ford. I didn't replace mine myself, but everyone here says that it isn't a hard job to do. Do a search for the HPOP o-rings and you will find a write up on it.
Thanks man i found them. If that's the problem i'll just have it done so i'm sure that it's done right. Thanks again.
Be ready for it to run funny for a little while after also. Some air will get in the system when the o-rings are changed and it took about 200 miles for mine to clean up and purge all of the air.
You know, this has got to be the best place on the net for us Ford guys!
Yeah i know i love it. You can find out almost everything about anything here. It's so much easier then taking it to the shop and asking whats wrong with my truck.
I'll just have it done so i'm sure that it's done right.
That's the very-best reason to DO IT YOURSELF!
How clean do you think a "factory-trained Ford technician" will clean those threads before using LocTite?
THAT's the all-important part of the repair. They have to be spotlessy oil-free for the LocTite to be effective. And, in my opinion, THAT's what actually does the sealing.
Yeah i wouldn't bring it to ford to get it done. It will be getting done by my buddy who went to school for the 7.3 powerstroke motor so i'll just take it to his house on a weekend and have him do it that way i'll know how to do it.
