Alternator!! Which wires have power?

So last night I was doing some work on my truck. To my surprise when I had my hood up, my main power lead going into my alternator was glowing red hot! It was also throwing a sparks show when i rev it a little. I havent had any trouble out of the charging system or starting!

I put another alternator on it, Now the son of a gun is charging up to 17 volts until I shut it off. The battery light also stays illuminated when the key is off and alternator connected, disconnect, it goes out. The two small wires on the alternator control the field right? One is suppose to be a ground, and the other power for the field?. At anyrate is there suppose to power on the one all the time?

Even when the key is off the small lead has power on it.

What do yall think? I would just go exchange the alternator but a friend gave it to me off a running truck

Thanks guys

Josh
It's always something argh haha

Thanks Ray

Truck Running:
With two pin connector connected and main lead dissconnected
Main lead shows from 13-14vts

Two pin connector dissconnected
Eventually goes to 0 volts

May be the regulator in the alternator, Is there any part on the truck that controls charging?
