Somthing to consider in your choice of scanners is upgradability. I have the Autoxray 6000. Granted it is about $600 but you can do free upgrades off of the net. In this way it is not likley to become obsolete when new systems are introduced.
ya.... i'm looking for $150.... not in the market for a new vehicle right now so i'm not worried about "the new style" if/when they come out with it.... as long as it will work with 1998-2001 i'm happy...
and some in the $150 range say they can be upgraded (not as much as the $300-800) but good enough for an average guy....
the way i look at it, i bought mine knowing i will be driving older trucks for a long time to come as the new wife sure loves them new cars! lol. so i bought the best i could without springing for a modis or solus so i can do all the work i need to do to keep these older trucks on the road! every time i have to take my truck into the ford shop for their diagnostic equipment it costs me $85 an hour, so i figure my scanner will pay for itself after a few breakdowns.
just to put it in perspective, i drive a '98 with 225,000mi, i just bought her a 2007 Cadillac CTS-V instead of myself the diesel i've been drooling over lol!
