73-77 The NSS is lcoated on the column

78/79 the NSS is on the transmission

This makes the wiring and column connectors different.

also the 77-79 mount to the firewall different

The 78/79's use a plastic shroud to mate to the dash board.

Do the changes in the firewall attaching methods make them non interchangeble?

With the right tools you can modify the firewall to make them fit.

Is the lower column/ firewall support spot welded to both style columns?

no, they swap with relative ease. the NSS as stated previous, is the main difference.

I'm pretty sure that you can swap the collar/base from the 77-79 onto the 73-76 shaft, but dont quote me. I have seen it done.

power steering and non-power steering are different lengths, 4x4 also had splined end, but so do tilt wheels. a splined to ragjoint end piece is needed on 2wd that previously had non-tilt.

Ok, I see now. I parted out a 79 column a while back that didn't have anything for the lower support attached to it. I wasn't sure if it had been removed.
Thank you for the replies.
