This has bugged me for a long time.

I see a caterpillar piece of equipment used to build roads that is a bit smaller than steamroller. It has a bunch of tires across the width of the machine. I can not remember the CAT number on the piece, although I have searched for it in the past and still have not been able to find out what its function is in the road building world.

What is its function? Anyone?

do you mean the Caterpillar PS150C Pneumatic compactor?
Search that, at the CAT site..there are pics and specs. i have no idea what it specifically does/I used to to be in road construction and never saw one in action.

Yes, that's it. WHAT IS IT FOR?????????????????????????????????

Ahhhhhh, thank you. It measures the density of a material buy the rate in which it moves over a surface. High or lower air pressure determines the compact of the material it is transversing.

Thanks

Here I was thinking he means a multi-tired pavement packer that was filled with heavy rocks and lead .and use to get the pavement packed more even after it was rolled with a roller packer.

i will have to look for one Tim.

but to put it simply, think of a large steel box, about 10-15 foot long, 6-7 foot wide, and 4-8 feet high. the center of the box is filled with whatever you can get your hands on. some use stone, some use dirt, the one we had was filled with scrap steel and weighed rite around 40 tons.

under the "Box" is nothing but tires. ours had 6 rows with 8 tires per row.
each axle set is staggered so the tires do not run in the same rut as the axle in front or rear of it.

most are used as dirt compactors, and you can still see them in use at horse tracks to compact the track surface after the groomer levels it.

Do you drive it or pull it? If you pull it, I know what you're talking about.
